What to do when your computer is slow? Especially if it seems like it's gotten slower over time? You can try these easy tricks:

  1. Make sure you have at least 10% of your drive free
  2. Scan for viruses and other malware - here's an example of how: Ninite Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware

  3. Close background processes in the 'System Tray' - see screenshot. Click the arrow, then right click on the programs and select to close or exit them. Each will have it's own list of options

  4. Use a vacuum cleaner or air compressor (at ho higher than 100 psi) to clean out the dust. Dust can cause corrosion and / or overheating which can affect computer performance

For most people, it's not an option to 'reformat' their computer - delete everything and start from scratch with a fresh copy of Windows. But if it's an option for you, it can make a big difference. Windows 10 has a feature where it can do that automatically, and even keep your files like pictures and documents in the same place so you don't lose anything.

If your computer is a few years old, chances are it has a 'mechanical' hard drive which means it can degrade over time and become slower - so even a clean reinstall of Windows and everything else won't fully restore it. In that situation, we recommend an upgrade to a 'solid state' drive. It's a newer technology that has no moving parts, and therefore much quicker and less likely to break. We can perform a direct copy of your old drive to the new, so everything will be exactly the same - just much faster.

There can be many other factors affecting your computer performance but these are the most common and simple to resolve.
